Granada. 1996.

I remember watching "The Bare Necessities" during my last year at University and if you enjoy a good fun, down to earth show then you'd definitely have enjoyed this!!  I emailed Granada TV to see if they would be willing to help me write about the show for the site and they really came up trumps!

The Bare Necessities

Mining a rich seam of down-to-earth humour, The Bare Necessities features five gritty characters in the shape of a group of Yorkshire pitmen who stumble on an exotic new career on the very night that their beloved colliery closes down.

As a thank you to the Women Against Pit Closures campaign, the lads book a group of strippers for a party in the Miners' Welfare Club.

But when the promised beefcake fails to turn up, the five have no choice but to don their miners' overalls and hard hats one last time and do the strip themselves.

Sexy choreographer Sonia quickly sizes up the lads' on-stage potential, and suggests they strut their stuff professionally.  And so The Bare Necessities are born...but it's a wild and bumpy ride from ripping up seams of coal to spliting the seams on your clothes in front of a heaving hen-night horde.

Written by Ken Blakeson (September Song), directed by Paul Unwin (co-creator of Casualty), The Bare Necessities comes from the team whcih made Rik Mayall Presents - Producer mark Redhead and Exec Producer Andy Harries.

A powerful piece of ensemble playing the Bare Necessities features Eamon Boland as ralph (former union official and leader of the pack), William ash as his schoolboy sone Tony, JOHN MICHIE, as hunky hard man Barry, Paul rider as would-be Aborigine Spuggy and Joe Duttine as unsuccessful gambler and ladies man' Steve.  Caroline Loncq cracks the whip as dance instructor Sonia.

Bursting with memorable characters drawn from a tight-knit community, The Bare Necessities celebrates an irrepressible can-do spirit in rumbustious and raunchy style.
